The Faculty of Physics and Electronic Science consists of three departments, namely, the Department of Physics, the Department of Electronic Science and the Department of Microelectronics and Optoelectronic Information. The three departments cover a number of disciplines including Electronic Science and Technology (the characteristic discipline of Hubei Province), Physics (Hubei provincial key (nurture) discipline), Microelectronics and Solid Electronics, Physical Electronics, Condensed Matter Physics and Circuit and System (discipline with Chutian Scholars post). The school offers doctoral program of second-level discipline in Nanometer Materials and Devices, Master's Degree programs of first-level discipline in Electronic Science and Technology and Physics, Master's Degree in Engineering in Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Master's Degree of Education in Teaching Methodology (Physics). The school has four undergraduate programs, namely, Physics (national characteristic discipline, provincial brand discipline), Electronic Science and Technology (provincial brand discipline), Microelectronic Science and Engineering, Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering as well as two talents-training programs for Strategic New (Pillar) Industries in Hubei province (with separate enrollment) in Electronic Science and Technology and Microelectronic Science and Engineering.The school boasts of a number of high-level scientific research and teaching platforms, such as The Provincial Key Laboratory of Ferroelectric Piezoelectric Materials and Devices, The Research and Development and Promotion Center of Electronic Functional Materials for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in Hubei Province, The Key Base of Independent Innovation for Colleges and Universities in Hubei Province for Energy Information Materials, and The Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Basic Physics in Hubei Province.

The school has a strong and experienced faculty of 71 members with 56 full-time teachers, of whom 19 are professors, 25 are associate professors, 8 are doctoral supervisors and 29 are master supervisors. With a national level teaching team, the teaching staff is mainly composed of young and middle-aged backbone teachers, thus constituting a team of optimal age structure, title structure and knowledge structure.Most of the teachers have a doctoral degree and an experience of studying or working abroad. Among them there are 2 experts on the Hundred-Talents Program in Hubei Province, 2 on the list of New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, 4 distinguished professors, 11 lecture professors and 6 young scholars on Chutian Scholar Program, 1 enjoying special allowance from the State Council, 3 on the list of Excellent Youth of Hubei Province who have made outstanding contributions, 4 on the list of New Century High-level Talents of Hubei Province, 1 for the training program of leading high-level talents in Hubei province. Through the years, the faculty has won quite a number of honors such as national advanced workers, national model teachers, Hubei provincial model workers, provincial teaching masters, and provincial May 4th Youth Medal.

Over the past five years, the school has undertaken more than 100 scientific research projects, including the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program) and the projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (major research programs, surface, youth and international cooperation projects) and won many national and provincial awards for scientific and technological achievements (3 provincial awards for natural science) and teaching achievements. It has published more than 10 textbooks including 3 national planning textbooks and monographs, over 300 papers including 200 SCI papers and 7 ESI most cited papers with more than 2000 SCI citations. It has applied for and authorized more than 100 invention patents.In the 1990s, the school successfully developed the high-power piezoelectric ceramic transformer and won the second-level National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology. The transformer was widely used in the army's shipboard radar, making great contribution to the national defense.At present, the researches in the fields of micro-nano sensors, optoelectronic and microelectronic devices, green energy materials and devices, magnetoelectronics and spintronics, condensed matter physics, etc. have reached the advanced level in the world while some achievements are in a leading position.
